A letter from the TP Players Communication Officer:

The TP Players have recently been awarded the honor of representing the United States at the American High School Theater Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in conjunction with the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2006. The Edinburgh Festival is the largest and most prestigious theatre festival in the world. Only a handful of theatre groups from the USA are asked to participate each year, and even fewer of those are from high school programs.

To select the schools that will participate in the Edinburgh Festival, AHSTF relies on state, regional, and national theatre organizations and university theatre professors to nominate the nation's top high school theatre programs. Each nominated school receives an application, and the AHSTF Board of Advisers reviews all completed applications. The panel of college theatre professionals comes from all corners of the country. Our program was selected as number one in California. Normally, much larger and recognized theatre groups are chosen, often from performing arts schools. To our knowledge, the TP Players is one of the only student-run organizations to be invited to the festival from the USA.

Our fundraising efforts are now underway in order to be able to pay for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and students are doing immense amounts of work to do their parts in raising the large amount of money needed to make this trip a reality.

Some examples of the work being done include about 15 TP Players students working 6-7 hours a night, four to five nights a week at the Scream Zone at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, a team of students working weekly to make and sell refreshments at our school's football games, several students researching individuals and foundations to provide backing, and another team of students and parents alike working to seek out corporate sponsors.

The press is welcome at all theatre events, and complementary tickets are avaliable. For more information, please feel free to browse our website or to e-mail or call me personally.

Sincerely,

Matt Wagner
